This will be the first time that I’ve reviewed a beer from Mikkeller and I’m really looking forward to it.
The website, mikkeller.dk, didn’t reveal anything specific about any of their beers, so I, once again, turned to ratebeer.com to find some information on the Beer Geek Breakfast.
Recent batch of this has been brewed by Mikkeller at Nøgne Ø. Has also been brewed at Gourmetbryggeriet, Denmark.
English: An oatmeal stout with 25.0% oat-based ingredients and a nice touch of gourmet coffee. A beer that goes extremely well with breakfast.
Ingredients : Water, malt (pils, oat, smoked, caramunich, brown, pale chocolate and chocolate), roasted barley, flaked oats, hops (centennial and cascade), ale yeast and gourmet coffee.
Let’s get started, shall we?
This brew comes in a 16.9 oz. bottle and has an ABV of 7.5%.
It poured pitch black with no highlights whatsoever showing through. It had a dark tan head that was extremely smooth, thick, creamy and soft. It had huge girth and the retention time was outstanding. The lacing looked pretty good too. The foam was easily regenerated with a few quick swirls.
The nose on the Beer Geek Breakfast was about what you’d expect. A nice dose of coffee beans intertwined with some bittersweet chocolate, herbal hops and creamy oatmeal. It was nice and well balanced. Not too robust or overpowering. Very earthy and very round. A very nice smelling beer to say the least.
The taste reaffirmed the coffee/java/espresso characteristic. Dried and burnt coffee grounds mixed very nicely with the bitter chocolate. Hints of burnt toast and oats as well as a bit of a “milky” savor. I also stumbled on a woody touch in addition to a slightly roasted nutty flavor. A somewhat relaxed hop bite that just reminded me that they were in there. Like the aroma, not overly potent, but well balanced, fitting and suitable.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied, dry, smooth, creamy, slightly chewy and slick. Just a smidgen of warmth and a very nice amount of flavor was left behind. The carbonation was quite good as well.
We have a very good beer right here. I do favor Coffee Stouts for some reason and the Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast does a very nice job of representing the style. It was super easy to drink and it’s definitely worth a try if you can find it. Even though I do really, really like this beer, it is, for me, not quite on the level of the Founders Breakfast Stout. I can’t help it, I just love that beer and, unfortunately, I judge all others by that brew. With that being said, this beer would be a more than worthy substitute if I wasn’t able to find the Founders. So, pick this brew up and let me know what you think. Which do you think is better? The Founders Breakfast Stout or the Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast? Also, if you guys know of another great Coffee Stout to try let me know. I’m always on the lookout for them.
Thanks for reading and commenting everyone. I really appreciate it.
Until next time. Cheers.
