Review of Jolly Pumpkin Biere de Mars

16 Aug

It’s time for another craft beer review guys and for today’s sampling I’m going to be trying the Biere de Mars produced by Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales located in Dexter, Michigan.

A craft beer drinker has to respect what Jolly Pumpkin does regardless of their like of sour beers, so let’s get to the website, jollypumpkin.com, and see what they have to say about this particular concoction.

A sustaining beer that is brewed to comfort in the gusty ides of March and welcome in a wealth of warmer weather.

Alrighty.  Let’s turn it up.

It came in a 25.4 oz. bottle with a 7.0% ABV.

It poured a very deep burgundy/red color.  Like an oxblood brown type of color with brighter ruby highlights around the edges.  It produced a medium sized, off white head that was smooth and somewhat creamy.  The retention time was very nice and the lacing was sturdy too.  It was a touch thin, however it was consistent for the duration.

The aroma released scents of soured black cherries and blackberry’s.  Maybe even a tone of red apple skins too.  Hints of oak and earth poked through as well while a medium strength mustiness and barnyard funk really helped balance the complexities.

The flavor was less intense, but no less complex.  Slightly soured cherries with more of the oak and wood.  A slight red wine aspect couldn’t be denied.  The funkiness and earth savors were muted and very manageable. Not bad at all I didn’t think.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied.  Extremely smooth, slick and mostly dry.  The carbonation was medium strength and a more than suitable amount of flavor was left covering the palate after each sip.

Truthfully, I thought this was a very good beer.  Well made and well balanced all the way around.  It wasn’t overly intense, yet it wasn’t a pushover either.  It sat right in the middle.  It was very enjoyable and stayed true to the style all the while maintaining a high drinkability.  I’d definitely recommend giving the Jolly Pumpkin Biere de Mars a try if you see it on the shelf.  I know I’ll probably pick it up again sometime.

Thanks for reading and commenting everyone.  I really appreciate it.

Until next time.  Cheers.
