Erdinger Weissbier crystal is particularly welcome as a tasty thirst-quencher for hot summer days.
This specialty wheat beer gets its crystal appearance from a particularly long filtration process, known in the industry as “fine filtration”, whereby the beer becomes completely clear.
This gives Erdinger Weissbier crystal its sparkling and refreshing character – which also makes it the ideal wheat beer for warm summer days.
Let’s drink, shall we?
This beer has an ABV of 5.3% and it comes in a 16.9 oz. bottle.
Like the description states, it poured very clear with an attractive golden color. Some bright yellow highlights were shown around the curves of the glass. The crown was big, billowy, rocky, frothy and white. The retention time seemed adequate and the lacing was quite patchy. It didn’t look too bad standing in the glass I didn’t think.
The nose brought out a significant amount of grain. It was both clean and fresh with light citrus hints in the form of lemons and apples. A touch of spice, but not much really. I was expecting some banana notes, but I didn’t find much. Even after it warmed they were barely there.
It was also significantly grainy in the taste, although still rather clean and fresh. It displayed a slight breadiness with a light cracker flavor. A small relish of lemons and apples were found once more, but like the aroma, I didn’t find much by way of banana or spice. Although as the brew began to warm, the banana did become a tad more evident. It never did develop into a dominating factor however. The hops were faint and the bitterness was very subdued. Overall, not overly impressive.
The mouthfeel was medium to medium/thin. It was snappy, crisp, thirst quenching, refreshing and decently dry. The carbonation was quite good, however the flavor vanished relatively quickly from the palate.
Well, one thing is for sure. This beer was super easy to drink. It is, without a doubt, a Summer beer. Perfect for an outdoor BBQ. I enjoyed it after mowing the lawn and it went down way too easy. I do believe I could slam several of these without even batting an eye. It’s not nearly the best “Hefe” I’ve ever had, nor did I think it was properly representative of the “Hefe” moniker, however there are a lot worse beers to be had out there. I think it would be worth a try if you see it on the shelf, but I don’t recommend going out of your way to find it. It was, simply, an easy going, crisp, clean, fun to drink, session beer. No more, no less.
