Review of He’Brew Messiah Bold

Tonight’s review is of the He’Brew Messiah Bold from the Shmaltz Brewing Company situated in both San Fransisco, California and New York, New York.

The website, shmaltz.com, has a small description to help explain the beer.

It’s the beer you’ve been waiting for!

A deep, bold nut brown ale beautifully balanced with rich dark malts and a complex hop character converging to reveal a simply enchanting elixir.

How about we pour a glass?

This brew stepped to the plate in a 12 oz. bottle and 5.6% ABV.

It poured a decent dark brown/ruby red color that appeared clear with a head that was off white and of good size.  The cap was a bit soapy and didn’t have the longest retention I had ever seen, although it was ok and it provided some honorable lacing.

The aroma was a rather nice, sweet smelling caramel and toffee.  A tad bit toasty with some gentle nuttiness.  Some chocolate notes came creeping in to add a touch of richness, but as the beer warmed the malt became more and more robust and started to define the profile.

The taste was, again, the caramel with delicate hints of chocolate and toffee.  A bit of the toasty, nutty flavor followed by some noticeable bitterness.  It starts rather rich, but mellows as the palate adjusts to the overall complexity.  Balanced evenly and commendably.

The mouthfeel was medium, rather creamy, smooth and dry.  A wee bit chewy even.  Does a pretty good job of enveloping the tongue, throat and roof of the mouth with flavor.

I have read a few reviews of this brew that were not so positive, however I thought it was pretty good really.  Solid in all aspects.  Drinkable with suitable complexity and appeal.  This beer would be great on a cool, crisp, Fall evening.  If a friend offered this to me to sip on, I would have no problem at all drinking it again.

Have you had this Shmaltz brew?  If so, did you enjoy it?  I did!!!

Thanks for reading and I hope you are enjoying the blog because I am having a ball reviewing all of these great brews.  Please leave a comment if you would like.  I would love to hear from you.
