Hi guys. For today’s craft beer review I’m going to be trying the Green Gold produced by the Mikkeller Brewery located in Kobenhavn, Denmark.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to get my hands on a lot of Mikkeller brews lately, so I thought I would give this one a try.
The website, mikkeller.dk, doesn’t have a commercial description for this beer, therefore I’m just going to pour it and decipher for myself.
Let’s do this.
This brew has an ABV of 7.0% and it comes in an 11.2 oz. bottle.
It poured a caramel brown to burgundy color with a light tan head that was soft, kind of rocky, somewhat creamy and very nicely sized. The retention time was good and the lacing was solid too.
The nose released a great deal of sweet caramel malt. Some citrus of grapefruit as well as some dank resin and earthy hops followed. That was about it really. It was balanced fairly well and everything, but I was honestly expecting a more forthcoming bouquet. Oh well.
The taste was dank and musty. Quite a bit of caramel sweetness intermingled with a strong biscuity malt. More grapefruit citrus was accounted for as well as further savors of earthy hops. The bitterness was fairly forceful and it left a good sting on the sides of the tongue.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied. Dry, chewy, sticky and smooth. The carbonation was good and a sturdy amount of flavor was left behind after each sip.
Well, this beer was just “ok” for me. I’ll probably get ridiculed for saying that, but I just thought that the caramel malt and the dank”ness” was a bit more present than what I typically like in my IPA’s. The citrus seemed to be pushed to the side a little too much. I may have had an older bottle or something. I don’t know. I had no trouble finishing it and the drinkability was suitable enough for me that’s for sure, but I didn’t think that it was as outstanding as others have made it out to be. I would love to pick up another bottle sometime just to see if this was a one time thing or if they are all like that. If you guys have ever tried the Mikkeller Green Gold and had a different experience please feel free to leave a comment and let me know.
Thanks for reading and commenting everyone. I really appreciate it.
Until next time. Cheers.
